Handling Integrity Constraints of Complex Objects in Spatial Databases

چکیده
The study reported in this paper is based on two assumptions about the importance of the consistency of a geographical database. Firstly, consistency is an important factor concerning the quality of data. Secondly, consistency of a geographical object requires that the description of the context of the object is a part of the object definition. In object-oriented databases, it is possible to model geographical entities as complex object types whose semantics are captured through constraints on objects and object relationships. This paper examines the modelling of geographical objects and spatial relationships between them. A geometrical object model for geographical entities is presented which consists of 1) the structural definition of the objects, and 2) the enforcement of the implicit structural constraints as object methods. A modelling technique for specifying explicit constraints on spatial relationships between objects is also presented.

An inconsistency measure of spatial data sets with respect to topological constraints
An inconsistency measure can be used to compare the quality of different datasets and to quantify the cost of data cleaning. In traditional relational databases, inconsistency is defined in terms of constraints that use comparison operators between attributes. Inconsistency measures for traditional databases cannot be applied to spatial datasets because spatial objects are complex and the const...
متن کاملMethodical Spatial Database Design with Topological Polygon Structures
Spatial databases form the foundation for a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI). For this, a spatial database should be methodically developed to accommodate its role in SDI. It is desirable to have an approach to spatial database development that considers maintenance from the early stage of database design and in a flexible way. Moreover, there is a lack of a mechanism to capture topological re...
متن کاملAn Adverbial Approach for the Formal Specification of Topological Constraints Involving Regions with Broad Boundaries
Topological integrity constraints control the topological properties of spatial objects and the validity of their topological relationships in spatial databases. These constraints can be specified by using formal languages such as the spatial extension of the Object Constraint Language (OCL). Spatial OCL allows the expression of topological constraints involving crisp spatial objects. However, ...
متن کاملFrom Transactional Spatial Databases Integrity Constraints to Spatial Datacubes Integrity Constraints
Spatial multidimensional databases (also called "spatial datacubes") are the cornerstone of the emerging Spatial On-Line Analytical Processing technology (SOLAP). They are aimed at supporting Geographic Knowledge Discovery (GKD) as well as certain types of spatial decision-making. Although these technologies seem promising at first glance, they may provide unreliable results if one does not con...
متن کاملDeriving Spatial Integrity Constraints from Geographic Application Schemas
Integrity constraints of various kinds must be observed when creating or updating a database in order to preserve the semantics and the quality of stored data (Elmasri & Navathe, 2000). Within the scope of geographic applications, integrity assurance requires special attention from the designer, since most geographic applications use data that depend on spatial relationships (Egenhofer & Franzo...
